49er football is still 2,700-plus steps to goal

8.28.2009
Oct. 15 will be an important date for UNC Charlotte.
$28.57 could be an important figure, too.
The date is the deadline for football supporters to buy 5,000 seat licenses for the team's first stadium. As of a week ago, 2,790 seat licenses still awaited owners.
The price is how little you'll have to pay, per month through June 2012, to snatch up one of those seat licenses.
Chancellor Dubois set the goal of selling 5,000 seat licenses last year as a way of measuring whether the Charlotte community will support football here, both with tickets and cash. Football programs at state schools are funded through private contributions, and launching a new one at UNC Charlotte will take big money.
The plan approved last fall by the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees put the startup cost at $45 million - $25 million for a stadium and the rest for training facilities.
Seat-license sales have lagged, as the global recession chilled Charlotte's economy.
Despite that, boosters have now bought nearly 2,200 as of last Friday. The athletic foundation recently made licenses easier to afford, by letting people pay by the month.
A calculator at charlotte49erfootball.com quickly figures out how much you'd pay: currently $28.57 per month through June 2012 for a $1,000 seat license.
Seat licenses are not game tickets. Rather, they are licenses to purchase the tickets.
Green $1,000 licenses get you a seat between the 30-yard lines and the end zones. Gold $2,500 licenses get you seats near midfield. White Gold licenses get you even more, but you'll need to call the Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation to learn the benefits and the price.
