International Festival to showcase nearly 50 nations

University City is becoming Global Village, too.
The showcase of our growing worldwide connections takes place on Sept. 26 when UNC Charlotte hosts the 34th annual International Festival.
People representing nearly 50 nations will share their customs, arts and foods. The high point of the event comes at 2 p.m., when representatives of dozens of ethnic and country groups, dressed in traditional costume, stage the Olympics-style Parade of Nations through Halton Arena.
UNC Charlotte has become the region’s global hub. More than 1,000 international students now study here, including 300 new undergraduates from 47 countries. Many faculty members and staff also are foreign-born.
The international festival will take place 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in and around Barnhardt Student Activity Center. Admission is free. Food and crafts are available to purchase.
Besides the many exhibits, the festival offers activities for children and numerous performances.
The Festival of Music and Dance, at noon and 3:45 p.m., showcases dance and music by several cultural groups.
Several professional groups will also perform throughout the day, including the Loch Norman Pipe Band, playing Scottish music (10-11 a.m.), the Alborado Andean Band (11 a.m.-4 p.m.) the German-style Alpenlander Duo (11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) the Celtic Folk Band (1-2 p.m.), A Different Drum, performing music ranging from South African to Brazilian (3-4 p.m.), and Manny y Sus Trabucos, playing Caribbean-style music (5-6 p.m.).
