Bioinformatics Building earns silver LEED certification

11.7.2009
Charlotte Research Institute has earned an important environmental designation for its new Bioinformatics Building.
The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the building LEED silver certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
The building, which opened this fall, reflects UNC Charlotte’s new standard for energy efficiency, said Jennifer Evans, the university’s construction manager for capital projects in facilities management.
Recent legislation requires that state buildings must lower their energy use by 30 percent.
Designers and builders of the 75,000-square-foot Bioinformatics Building took several measures to save energy during construction, such as recycling about 80 percent of construction waste and using locally produced materials, where possible, to cut transportation distances.
The completed building houses the CRI’s center for development and commercialization of computer-assisted approaches to biological problems.
The building continues to save energy and protect the environment through the use of low-flow toilets and water-fountains, low-emission paints and carpets, and a mechanism that monitors the electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems.
The U.S. Green Building Council recognizes sets three levels of LEED certification to recognize these efforts. The silver level is the lowest, though still much higher than for traditional construction.
Another building designed to meet LEED silver certification will soon start to rise at CRI. Work should begin in a few months on the 200,000-square-foot Energy Production and Infrastructure Center.
