YMCA will help you craft your personal fitness plan

11.28.2009
Nobody has talked about fitness longer in Charlotte than the YMCA. The first Y opened here 134 years ago.
Today at University City’s YMCA you can swim, lift weights, take part in sports, attend dozens of fitness and exercise classes, learn about nutrition and even receive one-on-one weight management help.
With so many options, the toughest part could be choosing where to start. Fortunately, the YMCA can help you there, too. Just drop by the Y and request a health consult.
Richard Reinholz, senior fitness and wellness director at the University City, Lake Norman and Lowe’s YMCA branches, says the goal of the health consult is to help people design their own fitness journey, with guidance.
The consult begins with conversation. One of the Y’s health professionals will talk with you about your goals and interests, then give you a tour.
The University City Y has a 31-acre campus near the corner of West W.T. Harris Boulevard and Mallard Creek Road. The facility includes a large fitness center, indoor heated pool, outdoor water park, indoor and outdoor tracks and a health center operated by Carolinas Medical Center.
You’ll also hear about the many programs available to Y members, such as group exercise, fitness appointments, youth and adult sports and nutritional education.
With the help of the wellness professional, you’ll set up a program that meets your needs.
The health consult is not required to join the Y. Some people already know what they’re after, such as access to the Y’s free-weights area and workout classes.
But most visitors who say they want to improve their health do go through the consults, Reinholz says.
