ELECTROLUX COMES TO UC!

12.17.2009
Electrolux to join the growing ranks of global firms making University City home.

By now you probably heard. Electrolux becomes the first major headquarters lured to Charlotte since Royal Insurance came in 1984. Even better news for University City, the company will make the University Research Park its home by leasing the former First Charter building on David Taylor Drive where they will invest $8.3 million.

In making the announcement, president & CEO of Electrolux Major Appliances Kevin Scott said he and others from their Major Appliances North American headquarters in Augusta GA would be among the first to relocate next summer. He characterized the move as a “rolling” process with employees coming from Cleveland and Columbus OH, Springfield TN, Anderson SC and a sales and finance office in Huntersville. Until the impact of those moves is analyzed, he said he could not speculate on how many would be hired locally. They expect to have nearly 738 employees.

Scott cited the good transportation access including proximity to the growing number of international flights from Charlotte Douglas as factors that lured them here. He could not resist asking for a direct flight to Stockholm, something other University City companies like IKEA, Husqvarna and University Volvo are sure to second.

Electrolux’s announcement comes as University City Partners is undergoing a major study for the 43-year-old University Research Park (URP) that follows on the heels of last year’s Urban Land Institute study. URP has a tax value of $1 billion, 10 million square feet of office space and over 20,000 employees.
