Next steps at Belgate mixed-use center

2.23.2010
It has been a year since IKEA opened its Carolinas store at the Belgate center at City Boulevard and I-85.
The severe recession poured molasses on commercial development nationwide, but there are new signs of progress beginning to rise out of the ground at Belgate. Belgate's developer, Crescent Resources, recently began work on connecting Brookside Lane from IKEA Boulevard to North Tryon Street.
National retailer Furniture Row thinks it is close to announcing the start of construction for a new furniture center across the street from IKEA.
The 70,000-square foot center, with four home-furnishings stores, would go at the corner of IKEA Boulevard and the future Brookside Lane extension.
Belgate covers more than 200 acres and has 18 retail/restaurant parcels, sites for two hotels and places for two multifamily residential communities.
Belgate will play an important role in developing the future road grid for University City's business core that the University City Area Plan has recommended. IKEA Boulevard eventually will link Belgate to McCullough Drive, and Shopping Center Drive - the road beside Walmart - eventually will extend to I-85. Planners envision that road someday jumping across I-85 to University Research Park. Shopping Center Drive already runs through the Commons at Chancellor Park development to University City Boulevard.
