UNC Charlotte staging Martha Graham work

3.12.2009
Time magazine called Martha Graham the “Dancer of the Century.”
One of Graham’s signature works, ”Steps in the Street,” will be restaged March 25-29 at UNC Charlotte, as part of the Department of Dance Spring Concert.
The concert will include several other original and newly staged works by Department of Dance faculty members.
Graham’s artistic legacy includes the creation of 181 original works, the development of a distinctly original modern dance technique, and the establishment of the Martha Graham Dance Company and School, now the oldest and most celebrated contemporary dance company in America.
“Steps in the Street” is part a 1936 Graham suite titled “Chronicle” that captures, in abstract, the pervasive loneliness and desperation of the Great Depression.
UNC Charlotte Department of Dance faculty member and Martha Graham Company alumnus Dr. Kim Jones is restaging the piece through special arrangement with Martha Graham Resources.
Performances will be 8 p.m. March 25-28 and 2 p.m. March 29 in Robinson Hall, which faces University City Boulevard just north of the new main entrance. Theater-goers can park at the nearby East Parking Deck.
Tickets cost $14 for the general public and $6 for senior citizens and students. The Robinson Hall box office is open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and one hour before each performance.
