Future taking shape now at CRI

3.30.2009
A wide range of research is taking place at UNC Charlotte’s Research Institute, says Executive Director Bob Wilhelm. (That's him showing a super-sensitive piece of lab equipment to members of a visiting Urban Land Institute team last fall.)
Recently, UNC Charlotte Public Relations interviewed a number of experts at the University regarding pertinent issues affecting our region, the economy and activity here at the University.
Wilhelm offered this list of significant research initiatives:
1) Optoelectronics - We are working on photovoltaic (aka solar) technology that improves light capture of solar panels by 49%.?
2) Precision Metrology - We are creating advanced manufacturing techniques for companies such as Boeing to produce parts that are lighter, cheaper and perform better under stress.?
3) Chemistry - We are working on additives that convert waste products such as glycerin into useable Biodiesel Fuel.?
4) eBusiness - We are working on solutions to track Wire Fraud and are developing world class techniques to protect assets of banks through the Internet.?
5) Engineering - We are taking the lead for the region's energy needs through the formation of EPIC, the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center which will serve as the regions catalyst in training the future of energy workers throughout the Southeast.
6) Bioinformatics - We are nearing completion of the world’s largest Bioinformatics and Genomics Center which will house experts who effectively diagnose patterns in DNA sequences...the recognition of these patters help researchers identify new techniques to battle diseases such as AIDS and Diabetes.
