April 22 Conference targets innovation, light rail

4.3.2009
Just 20 miles and a county line separate our region's biggest catalysts for global competitiveness. What if reliable mass transit linked the two, as well as business parks and neighborhoods in between?
Get thought-provoking insights from leaders of urban transformation at the 2009 University City Economic Development Conference, "Steel Wheels Along the Innovation Corridor," April 22 at the University Place Hilton.
Featured speakers include:
HARNESSING OUR BRIGHTEST MINDS - Leslie Boney
"In a world where the U.S. can't compete on cost, we have to compete on innovation," says UNC system Associate Vice President Leslie Boney. Boney helps N.C. communities tap the intellectual power of our 16 state universities. Learn about the innovators at the N.C. Research Campus and UNC Charlotte, and how a mass-transit link could aid their work.
TURNING PLANS INTO RAILS - Keith Parker
Charlotte Transit CEO Keith Parker will discuss progress on building Charlotte's LYNX Blue Line from uptown to UNC Charlotte and what it might take to extend the line to Kannapolis.
HARVESTING THE RESULTS - Todd Noell
Todd Noell of the Noell Consulting Group is an expert at putting numbers to "what if?" questions, including the amount of transit-oriented development Charlotte might expect on its five transit corridors. Noell will review possible development opportunities springing from a light-rail line between the two research centers.
HERE'S HOW TO GET MOVING - Mayors Scott Padgett and
Robert Misenheimer
Concord Mayor Scott Padgett and Kannapolis Mayor Robert Misenheimer will talk about the steps needed to gain public support, and funding, for light rail.
