WFAE reporting wins Murrow Awards

How good are the journalists at University City-based WFAE Public Radio?
Good enough to win five of six regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for excellence in electronic journalism.
The awards were announced in early April by The Radio-Television News Director Association, the world’s largest professional organization devoted exclusively to electronic journalism.
WFAE’s winning entries spanned the breadth of radio journalism, including:
• News Series – “The Buffalo-Charlotte Connection,” a five-part series by Mark Rumsey and Scott Graf on the relationship between the two cities.
• Hard News Feature – “Episcopal Splits,” a report by Julie Rose on the rift among Charlotte churches caused the U.S. Episcopal Church’s position on homosexuality.
• Sports Reporting – “NFL Fines & Rough Play,” Scott Graf’s report on efforts to rid the NFL of excessively rough play.
• Use of Sound – “Roller Derby,” Julie Rose’s report on the sport’s comeback, complete with background sounds of roller-rink echoes, shrieks and whistles.
• Continuing Coverage - 2008 general election.
WFAE competed against radio stations in the Carolinas, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee for the regional awards. All of the winning entries now go on to national competition.
WFAE has offices at One University Place and broadcasts in Charlotte at 90.7 FM. The station’s standard programming also is available on line and in digital broadcasts as WFAE HD1. WFAE also broadcasts additional programming on HD2 and HD3.
