Arts, crafts show June 13-14 at University Place

6.1.2009
Looking for a unique gift or decoration that doesn't break the bank? Come to the lakeside University Place Arts and Crafts show on June 13-14 and browse the creations of several dozen artisans.
"People coming to this show will be mostly local and regional artists and crafters, and all of their work is handmade," said Roger Brown, who is organizing the event with his wife, Linda.
"The majority of merchants will have things that people can afford to buy, not just look at," he added.

ORGANIZERS THOUGHT, WHY NOT HERE?

The Browns live in University City. Linda makes purses and sells them at crafts shows across the Southeast as well as online at PursesToo.com.
Roger said that he and Linda kept wondering when someone would hold a craft show at University Place. Finally they got tired of waiting and asked the center's owner, Casto, for permission to organize their own.
The exhibitors will include several jewelry makers, a woman who paints on wine glasses, a glassblower who creates marbles and wine-bottle stoppers, and a couple of artists whose works sometimes sell for a few hundred dollars, Brown said.
Linda Brown will display her handmade handbags, of course, along with hand-painted key chains and accessories.
The show will have plenty to keep kids amused, too. A children's area will feature inflatables, a face painter and members of the Carolina Clowns.
Some of the crafts items will appeal to youngsters, too, like pipe-cleaner-and-ribbon halos for little girls to wear, made by the Browns' niece. "They sell for a dollar, and the proceeds go to her college fund," he said.

WANT TO GO?
The University Place Arts and Crafts Show will be 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, June 13, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, June 14, around the lake near the University Place Hilton. Visitors can enter a contest to win a two-night stay at the University Place Hilton. Get details from exhibitors during the event. Artists and crafters wishing to exhibit can get details by contacting Roger Brown at 704-962-8488 or roger@pursestoo.com.
